Why Being a Crazy Writer is Good

March 8, 2011 by charlesdoddwhite

Every quarter I get a chance to teach a lit class I like to drag out the Youtube and show a few choice excerpts from literary infamy. Literature as something created by a living, distorted hand is one of its most obviously enticing qualities. The imbalance of certain writers makes their intellectual accomplishments mean more to me.  I worry that we’re becoming too polite, too media savvy. I want to be surprised by the wisdom of the wild man.

Watching HC on video is galvanizing for me in some strange way. If he can stay fucked up for 40 years before sobering and still write what he wrote, casper milquetoast me might keep at it and produce something worthwhile before my time’s done.

I also hold out hope that Crews will write one more badass thing but it seems less and less likely. This interview is great, not just because it’s Crews, but because Denis Miller is so clearly bemused. I can see him yelling at people in the back during commercial about why is this guy on my show.
